Erica Ando is the Career & Biz Coach behind The Empowered Artist for the past 3 months, and guess what this 90 Day Business Launch grad has accomplished? Can we say a totally booked client roster and a waitlist? We can, because that’s exactly right! Erica works with artists who need a knowing, smart, kind, and supportive hand in making an impact with their work, and I know she’s delivering in spades. Want to hear how she got here? Read on, and don’t mind me while I’m blushing from her first response. (You have a sweet face too, Erica! )
Why did you decide to work with me?
A couple of reasons! One, I really didn’t know WHAT I wanted to do, and you specialized in helping women find their “thing.” I did a lot of research before reaching out to you and you were the perfect fit for where I was at the moment. Two, I loved your smile! I hope this doesn’t sound too weird, but your sweet face brought tears to my eyes (and I don’t cry at the drop of a hat!) You looked like someone I could trust. And I was right!
What were you doing work-wise when we started working together – and what are you doing now?
I have been working in the arts for over 20 years and was floundering as a freelance writer, editor, grant writer, independent curator, college art history instructor, etc etc etc. I knew I had to level up and to focus on something, which is why I wanted to work with a coach. I’m glad I found you! Right now, I’m running my business, The Empowered Artist, which is a business and career coaching service for artists. If you had told me I’d be doing this last year at the same time, I wouldn’t believe it. I launched the biz in December 2019 and already have clients and am booked solid until the spring. I love doing the work and love my clients! And I feel much more in control of my career and future.
What was your biggest takeaway from our work together?
Phew! There are too many! 1. don’t be a perfectionist (“do B- work!” which is still a huge challenge for me) 2. if something feels easy, it’s right (I’m used to working hard, so accepting “easy” is ironically, hard) 3. it’s not difficult to test out an idea (because I’m the boss and I get to say what to do and not to do!)
Think of someone who is currently in the shoes you wore when we first started working together. What advice do you have for her?
I’d say trust the process and do the work. As someone who questions everything all. the. time., I just went with whatever you told me to do, which sounds kind of cultish but it worked for me.
Is there anything that’s been a game-changer for you when it comes to your business that you can share? We’d love a good resource or a mindset/productivity tip!
It sounds simple, but I make my calendar into a to-do list. I chunk together similar tasks into blocks of time so I’m not doing random things all day long and just reacting to what comes my way. This keeps me focused and efficient with using my time and energy.
At the beginning of the week, I take time to figure out what my priorities are for the week. This keeps me from becoming distracted and feeling bad that I’m not chasing something that I just heard about on some podcast or read that some successful person did. And at the end of the week, I make time to reflect on the past week and figure out what worked and what didn’t. I feel that it’s a good way to finish the week, to celebrate my wins (another thing I learned from you. Celebrate a lot!), and to think about how I can make things better.
What’s on the horizon for your business? We’d love to hear about any upcoming offerings or goals!
I’m continuing to offer my one-on-one coaching service. I’m also committed to writing a blog article once a week for the next year about artists’ careers and businesses. My topics range from building your collector/buyer list and writing effective proposals to creating community with your art and developing the mindset to advance your career. And more! (Subscribe to my newsletter at empoweredartistcoach.com to get articles in your inbox!).
