Fall is a time for rich, deep shades that mirror the autumn leaves. But, it can also be a time for surprises when it comes to the palettes on the designer runways, and there were definitely a couple of unexpected shades this time around. If you’re starting to plan your fall wardrobe, you’ll find the best fall clothing colors to choose from below.
Fall 2020 color trends
Whether you love bright, jewel shades, you like the romance of pastels, or you prefer subdued, yet stylish neutrals, you’ll definitely find something to suit your style personality and personal tastes from the colors and neutrals below.
How many of these fall clothing colors do you already have in your closet?
1. Scarlet
There are few colors that can make the impact that red does. Plus, there’s a shade of red to go beautifully with every skin tone and every hair color. Perhaps, you might want to swap your little black dress for a little red dress this year, opt for a tailored suit or choose a scarlet coat.

2. Baby blue
Pastel shades are often associated with the spring and summer months. However, there was plenty of baby blue on the catwalks for fall. Designers, including Marc Jacobs, Erdem and Proenza Schouler teamed pale blue with black to give it a winter feel.

3. Or a deeper shade of blue
If pastels aren’t for you, blues came in every shade on the catwalks for fall 2020, so you could choose turquoise, cobalt or royal blue as one of your fall clothing colors (or scroll down to see the navy blues in the neutrals section).

4. Traditional fall clothing colors: Burgundy
If there’s one shade you would expect to find for fall, it’s probably burgundy. This deep, redish, purplish shade looks beautiful as summer turns to fall. A burgundy moto jacket (as shown at Dries van Noten), would look lovely instead of black, or you could opt for a burgundy dress.

5. Purples in every shade
Purple in every shade has been seen on the runways for the past few seasons. Whether you prefer a deeper, amethyst hue or a pastel shade, they’re all on trend.

6. Soft pink
Another pastel for winter and fall, pale pink was the choice of many of the big-name designers for at least part of their collection, with the likes of Miu Miu and Alexander McQueen choosing pink coats as their outerwear of choice.

7. Or shocking pink
However, if a pastel shade isn’t for you, you could choose a deeper shade of pink. Opt for sharply tailored jackets and suits, or wide legged pants.

8. A pop of orange
If you want to add some vibrancy to your outfits, how about choosing orange? A burnt orange looks particularly autumnal and would look lovely worn with your jeans.

9. Emerald green
Another color which came in a variety of hues for fall was green. How about choosing a deep emerald green and teaming it with black, as seen at MSGM (below, left).

10. Greenish-yellow
While you might expect to see mustard yellow for fall, the most popular shade of yellow for 2020 was a little different as it was mixed with a little green to create the unique shades (below).

Neutrals
Of course, it’s unlikely that you will want to only wear the colors above (although, of course, you could if you wanted to). Below, you’ll find the most beautiful neutrals to team with your favorite color combinations:
1. Navy
Many designers chose to team deep navy colors with black. You could opt for a navy evening dress or how about taking inspiration from the Victoria Beckham look (below, middle) and wearing a navy tunic or sweater with black leather pants or leggings.

2. Chocolate
If you love chocolate, then the shades below may appeal to you. These lovely, rich chocolate browns were given an extra shot of glamour through the textures and fabrics used.

3. Caramel
Another one for you if you have a sweet tooth – many designers showed off caramel or toffee shades.

4. Soft beige
Subtle and stylish, beige is one of those colors that can look very classy and expensive. You’ll see that designers (below) chose to keep their beige looks completely neutral, but you could always add a shot of color such as red or orange.

5. Black
It goes without saying that black is one of the shades on trend for fall 2020, given that black is never not in style. However, there was definitely more black on display this season than there has been in previous years.
Many designers chose top to toe black, which can be a harsh look to wear. However, if you do want to try, then adding a pop of red lipstick, as shown at Marc Jacobs (below, right) is a good way to stop your skin tone from looking a little washed out.

6. Shades of gray
Gray can be a softer shade to wear if you aren’t keen on black. Again, designers chose top-to-toe gray. Whether you choose a dark shade or gray or a paler tone, you’ll definitely be on trend.

7. Olive green
While you’ve already seen the emerald and yellowy-green shades above, the third popular shade of green on the fall 2020 runways was olive.
A utility shade which works as a neutral, you could wear some of the other on-trend colors with your olive green. At Fendi (below, right) for example, olive was paired with pastel pink.

8. Off white
White tends to be a neutral we wear more during the summer – which makes perfect sense, of course, as you’re less likely to be worried about your white clothing getting dirty because of inclement weather.
However, white can look very stylish during the cooler months too. If you don’t want to choose a crisp, pristine white, then you could opt for an off white or a creamier color.

9. Gold
It may be glamorous, but gold also works as a neutral. You could pair your gold with other neutrals, such as beige, or with colors such as red.

10. Silver
And, finally, another metallic for you. Silver works just as well as a neutral as its golden counterpart. Wear with other neutrals, such as black or navy, or team with a bright red.
